Clark Distinguished Chair Professor & Director, Industrial AI Center @ University of Maryland
Prof. Dr. Jay Lee is Clark Distinguished Chair Professor and Director of the Industrial AI Center in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is one of the people who defined Industrial AI as a discipline: machine learning tied to physical assets, not only to digital models. His current work covers transfer learning, domain adaptation, and Industrial Large Knowledge Models, with an emphasis on what he calls Industrial Physical AI - AI that improves machines, turbines, and other engineering systems in operation. He leads the Data Foundry, a platform of more than 100 industrial datasets, and the AI Factory initiative, an open lab for training engineers who can deploy these methods. From 2001 to 2019 he founded and directed the NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center for Intelligent Maintenance Systems at the University of Cincinnati. The center grew into a consortium of more than 100 companies and helped set the practice of predictive maintenance and prognostics at industrial scale. He is the author of Industrial AI (Springer, 2020).
